Why are Skills Important?

Jul 31, 2023

Skills are important because they are the foundation of our ability to perform tasks, solve problems, and achieve our goals. Having a set of skills enables us to be productive, efficient, and effective in our personal and professional lives. This helps a person in a lot of areas of life and makes sure that people do not have to stay dependent on a college degree to achieve a better living.

Jeff Striegel’s book Screw College discusses the importance of developing skills in life. He did not attend college and is living an extremely sustainable life with enough financial support to have an easy retirement. Though he did not attend college, he was able to learn from his experiences in life and made sure he followed specific rules that were self-implied. His book does not go against college but helps a reader understand the importance of having a high-paying skill. It is a process of hard work, but it helps a person make happier career choices and shows them how to learn discipline in their respected work field.
There are many reasons why skills are important:

Employability

In today’s job market, employers look for candidates who possess a combination of technical, soft, and transferable skills. Companies now have easier hiring policies, and this helps people realize that they do not need a college degree to maintain a certain lifestyle. People such as writers, hairstylists, dog groomers, and various other high-paying skills do not require college but pay almost the same amount as those who have obtained a college degree. This does increase employability and promotes individually-owned businesses.

Productivity

Skills enable us to complete tasks quickly and accurately. Once we have mastered the art of knowing how to perfect a specific job, we will be able to complete our work much more quickly. The accuracy during this process also matters, and since we are aware of what the task requires, our mind is already prepared to fulfil its needs in a shorter period.

Perfecting our skills also opens up the factor of freedom of time. We can then invest our time in something much different, which may open new opportunities for us.

Innovation

Skills are the building blocks of innovation. By learning new skills, we can come up with new ideas, products, and services. This builds our credibility in a specific industry and helps us advance to become leaders in our dedicated field. Working with skills allows us to interact with customers directly and acknowledge what their needs are.

Personal Growth

Skills development is an ongoing process that allows us to continuously learn, grow, and improve. By expanding our skill set, we can increase our confidence, self-esteem, and sense of accomplishment.

Adaptability

Skills enable us to adapt to changing circumstances, technologies, and environments. By learning new skills, we can stay relevant and competitive in today’s fast-paced world. This helps us stay on top of our game in the industry and make sure that we are giving our competitors a tough pace to keep up with.
In summary, skills are important because they enable us to achieve our goals, be productive, and thrive in our personal and professional lives.
